Hello,Kamado

A new way of living, with the old-style kamado.
A kamado is a traditional Japanese cooker for cooking rice, etc., using fuels such as firewood.
The effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake are still being felt.
Various other natural disasters take place periodically, all over Japan.
The ‘Kamado Project’ is a Creative Reconstruction Project of Tsukuba University.
Our activities centered on the Hojo area of Tsukuba City, which has suffered two disasters – earthquake and tornado. We focused on a kamado which had been left unused in an old house.
We tried to find a time-honored yet novel way of living, by cooking rice in a traditional, unhurried and labour-intensive manner, while enjoying exchanges with people in the community.

Cooking rice using the kamado helps people:

1. Prepare for disasters

2. Bond together

3. Gain awareness of their local resources.
